Food Trucks Win a Battle, but Not Their Freedom

Food Trucks Win a Battle, but Not Their Freedom

The Institute for Justice , which is championing the cause of food trucks , is celebrating the demise of some proposed regulations here in D.C. as a “Big win for economic liberty!”

Sorry, guys. It’s not. The food trucks, which have been fighting inspiringly to resist the regulations , may have won a battle. But they haven’t won their freedom.

The News 4 Washington report of the regulations' doom doesn't end there. It says the D.C. Council’s Committee on Business, Consumer, and Regulatory Affairs is working on new regulations. The old proposal would have limited the number of parking spaces for trucks and assigned them by a monthly lottery. The new one apparently will too, but it will be a somewhat different lottery.

Having to win an improved lottery every month in order to get the government’s permission to do business isn’t being free. Acting by right instead of by permission—that’s being free.
